22 degrees Celsius +/- 1 K, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year round. These are the indoor climate requirements for the new Petra III experimental hall at the DESY research centre – Deutsches
Elektronen-Synchrotron in Hamburg in northern Germany.
“Each RCWB diffuser supplies up to 1,905 m3 of air every hour and sits approximately 8 metres above the floor. They are individually regulated and, through their unique construction, supply chilled air horizontally and warm air vertically. It is because of this that the RCWB fits perfectly into the mixed ventilation concept chosen by DESY and their consultants, says Martin Wiebicke, Lindab.”
Petra III will become one of the most brilliant and powerful storage-ring-based x-ray sources in the world and will therefore attract thousands of researchers from around the world. “The fact that Lindab has been given the responsibility for supplying the complete indoor climate system is down to several factors,” says Michael Koepke, responsible for the HVAC installations at DESY. “Lindab’s quality was of the utmost importance,
but it was the full-scale tests that proved decisive. Nothing is allowed to go wrong when it comes to Petra III.”
The removal of exhaust air is done using Lindab RGS-4 duct-mounted ventilation grilles. In addition, the facility’s meeting rooms are equipped with Lindab’s Versio square ceiling diffusers.
“When we planned the hall we wanted to create an indoor climate installation of the highest quality,” explains Stephan Kufka and Rainer Oppermann, both at IWP Ingenieure Wiechers Partner and both HVAC consultants for DESY for this project. “The full-scale test that was carried out at Lindab in Farum showed that the proposed solution using adjustable and motorised rotation diffusers really could handle the experimental hall’s variable temperature loads.
The facility also meets current German requirements such as e.g. DIN, VDI and ENEV and through our cooperation with Lindab we’ve obtained an indoor climate set-up of the highest quality with documented and verified properties. Moreover, the entire set-up is very pleasing on the eye, which fits in well with this research environment.”
