DSV is a global supplier of transport and logistics services with around 22,000 employees and its own offices in more than 75 countries. Lindab has delivered a complete indoor climate and ventilation solution for the group’s newly built headquarters in Hedehusene, outside Copenhagen, which contractor JT3 Klima has just completed. One of the specifications was chilled beams with built-in LED lighting.
“Lindab delivered an excellent solution which both the architect and the ordering client are delighted with,” says Susanne Brumé Haacks, construction manager at ventilation installers JT3 Klima who installed the system. “Lindab has also, as usual, delivered the right product at the right time, given us fast, effective support and been there for us throughout the project. As we also used their MBBV plenum box, adjustment was quick and easy.” Lindab’s major delivery to DSV’s head office is another example of how function, aesthetics and high quality can be united in a modern, energy-efficient indoor climate system. DSV will move into the new headquarters during the summer, which is also when the large adjacent logistics building with almost 100 loading docks will come into service.
Customised chilled beam with built-in LED lighting
Approaching the 16,000 m2 building, one is struck by the clean, soft lines PLH Architects have designed for DSV. This feeling is reinforced as one steps into the building and see the stunning atrium, where light from the
enormous glass ceiling floods in and highlights the soft, curved shapes of the interior. Also visible from here are the countless Premum chilled beams delivered by Lindab and furnished with specially designed LED light fittings, which are also soft and attractively rounded in appearance.
“It was PLH Architects alongside consultants Moe A/S and light makers Philips who designed a beam prototype with integrated LED lighting,” says JT3 Klima construction manager Susanne Brumé Haacks. “When we then contacted Jesper Nystrup and Lindab, and it turned out they could adapt their existing Premum chilled beam for LED, Lindab was the natural choice.”
Lindab delivered 350 Premum chilled beams to DSV Hedehusene, specially adapted for LED lighting from Philips, along with 160 LCP diffusers with accompanying MBBV plenum boxes, 50 VRU variable flow regulators and 200 supply air grilles. As well as these Indoor Climate products, Lindab also supplied the complete duct system for the whole building including ducting, fittings, silencers etc. “It was certainly important that Lindab were able to adapt their Premum beam to the Philips light fitting,” Susanne continues. “The subsequent co-operation between ourselves, PLH, Philips and Lindab ran very smoothly. The result is a very attractive customised beam with space and fastening for the Philips LED fitting that we then assembled on site.”
“We too are delighted with the end result,” says Jesper Nystrup. “We could quickly present a solution to JT3 Klima and PLH Architects, which we then made a reality. In fact we have already received several queries from other customers for chilled beams with built-in LED lighting of this type, so I think it’s a product that will become part of our range in one form or another.”
Perfect support on site
“We’ve worked with Lindab on many different projects in recent years, including another DSV project: it was their new transport and logistics centre in Landskrona, Sweden,” Susanne adds.
“For this particular project, other suppliers were actually recommended, but we decided to go with Lindab again. This is because there’s something that distinguishes Lindab from most other suppliers, and that’s their responsibility and professional support both during and after the projects. In Landskrona for instance we had a minor problem with supply air in a chilled beam. Lindab were quickly on hand to help us resolve the problem. Had we used the recommended suppliers, we knew from experience that it would be a struggle to get them out here to deal with any problems that arose. So in the end, Lindab was an easy choice. Other positives are delivery reliability, a strong product range and designated contact people whom we know. This makes it easy for us to order and suborder deliveries and receive fast, reliable notifications we can rely on. All in all, it brings us more simplicity and peace of mind in our day-to-day work.”
Design continuity between projects
“Working with indoor climate and ventilation products from the same supplier makes life easier, both when planning the project and in the ordering and installation stages. This also means that when we deliver solutions for several different projects for the same customer, as in DSV’s case, we can use the same product solutions and ensure harmony in the design and aesthetics. For instance we used the same diffusers and beams in Landskrona as here in Hedehusene – even though the Premum beams had no lighting in Sweden. We’re also sure to use these products in the next DSV project as well,” Susanne continues. “Thanks to Lindab’s MBBV plenum boxes, fine adjustment of the system has gone very quickly and smoothly, taking two engineers just two weeks. That’s really satisfactory considering the size of the overall system!”
At most JT3 Klima has had six fitters on site, completing the entire installation in about nine months. The 350 Premum beams are in the open-plan office spaces and common areas, while the LCP diffusers and MBBV plenum boxes are in the large, light canteen on the ground floor, and in large and small conference rooms with temperature and CO2-controlled VAV systems. The entire building has low energy consumption and will be classified as a low-energy building. Moreover, the building’s systems are adapted for solar panel connection on the roof if needed in the future.
“It is of course great to see how customers like JT3 Klima appreciate the added value we can offer,” says Jesper Nystrup of Lindab. “Our expertise, our resources and solutions have the primary aim of bringing our customers success, by delivering solutions that completely meet their customers’ requirements on function, quality and aesthetics. If, as in this case, we can also be involved at an early stage, we can put forward some great ideas to ensure the best possible solution. After that, delivering what we promise and providing the necessary support go without saying.”
