Protection and comfort from MP3
With its 50 floors, the Allianz Tower is the daily workplace for around 4,000 people. Fire safety, as well as comfort, is naturally a prime consideration for megastructures of this kind. To ensure an optimal solution for both fire safety and indoor climate comfort, Lindab Group company MP3 has been chosen as the exclusive supplier of fire dampers and ceiling diffusers.
Milan’s skyline has undergone a veritable transformation recently. A number of skyscrapers have joined the Pirelli Tower and Unicredit Tower, the latest being the megastructure Allianz Tower, Italy’s second tallest building and the 19'th tallest in the European Union at 207 metres and 50 floors. The building was designed by star Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, along with Italian Andrea Maffei.
Meticulous product choice
A skyscraper is very much a structural challenge, one that has to unite the highest possible comfort with the best conceivable safety. “Great importance has been attached to minimising the risk of spreading fire and smoke,” explains Eros Peronato of MP3, a company in the Lindab Group.“Each component has been meticulously selected with this in mind, so we’re obviously delighted that MP3 was the natural choice to supply fire dampers for the whole building. The tower also contains around 3,6 kilometres of our slot diffusers, so we’re very much a supplier of comfort as well as safety.”
Technical support for a better solution
Ariatta, one of Italy’s leading technical consulting firms, was the prescriber, responsible for project planning and other aspects of the Allianz Tower. Cefla was the installer, a company that has been working with MP3 for many years. “As always, the products are only part of our solution,” says Michele Smiderle of MP3. “For instance, alongside Cefla we completely redesigned the building’s indoor climate system to achieve the set technical requirements. This also meant that we lab tested the products we deemed appropriate, obviously in combination with the relevant type of fan unit.”
“Each damper is fitted with a servo motor that immediately closes it and makes the wall fire safe when an alarm is set off,” Smiderle continues. “This in itself is not unique to MP3. What is unique is our ongoing fire damper product testing to EN 1366-2 standard and their ability to withstand pressure drops of as much as 500 pascals – more than 200 units better than that required by the standard. All our fire dampers are CE marked and also approved by the very strict German testing institute DIBt. All in all, MP3’s fire dampers comprise a solution that guarantees full heat insulation and reliable containment of hot and cold smoke – the major risk factor in fires.”
Around 100 WK25 fire dampers and a full 3,600 KH slot diffusers have been delivered to Cefla.“The fact that Ariatta and Cefla have once again chosen solutions from MP3 has a logical explanation,” Eros Peronato explains. “Our technical support has solved a number of problems in the original project solution, and our unique products have put safety and comfort at the highest possible level. I also know that Cefla values how quick and easy it is to install WK25 fire dampers.”
