​Inspirational perforated facade in anodized aluminium for Ystad's new public baths

 

When Ystad's new public baths opened its doors in summer 2014, it boasted an absolutely unique facade. In collaboration with the engineering consultant Sweco, the Danish architect's office Henning Larsen elected to clad the entire concrete structure with a ”floating”, backlit facade in anodized aluminium.

When we were doing the calculations for the contract, it entailed what was for us a completely new facade system.

The first time the technique has been used in Sweden

"This particular solution, with perforated and anodized aluminium plates mounted at a distance of approximately 400 mm from the facade, has never been used in Sweden," says Jan Kjellkvist, supervisor and co-owner of Plåtslagarna i Bromölla, the company which performed this complicated precision installation. "When we were doing the calculations for the contract, it entailed what was for us a completely new facade system. It's true, there was a corresponding solution on the market in Denmark, however, after contacting Jimmy Johnsson and Lindab in Kristianstad, we were informed that Lindab could offer an equivalent solution. It enabled us to offer a competitive facade package entirely in accordance with the architects' requirements and furthermore, one that was interesting in terms of price."

An effect of rising bubbles

The solution that Lindab supplied consists of a facade system in aluminium and the brackets used to attach it to the concrete wall. These are subsequently bound together with angled aluminium profiles in which the actual plates are secured. The plates are supplied with seven different hole patterns with different hole sizes. After being cut to the right dimensions and having holes punched, each aluminium plate is black anodized. The plates with the smallest hole sizes are then mounted at ground level. Aluminium plates with successively larger hole sizes are then mounted above them, which means that the holes increase in size the higher up on the 12 metre high facade you go. Turning on the upwardly directed lighting that is installed behind the plates produces the impression of air bubbles rising up through water. Undeniably, a fitting facade design for a public baths! "We manufacture all parts of this new solution," Jimmy Johnsson says, "and through this project we have developed a facade solution which is sure to turn up in more contexts. Moreover, all the fixings come from our subsidiary Unite, so this really is a complete Lindab solution." 

Precision work

The building that Henning Larsen designed consists of a minimalist main structure with a small number of large and small window sections. However, parts of the actual facade are bevelled, both vertically and horizontally, at certain corners as well as at the majority of window sections. "As the plates have to be positioned with a gap of exactly 12 mm, the entire installation really is characterised by precision," continues Jan Kjellkvist. "It means that each row of brackets is put in place using lasers where we continuously check all vertical and horizontal dimensions. Furthermore, the bevelled sections of the facade also require different bracket lengths and, if possible, and even more exact installation. The actual facade design also contains hundreds of small format spacer blocks. They are measured when the large aluminium plates are fitted, and then Lindab cuts them to the exact size, makes the holes and anodizes them. The assembly work can be completed after that, hopefully some time in late March, early April.”

All parties involved are satisfied

In total it involves a facade area of just under 3,000 m2. All aluminium plates consist of a special alloy adapted to achieve the best possible colour match and uniformity in the anodization. As the entire facade structure complies with the C4 corrosion category, so also are all attachment screws, for instance the category C4 Marutex screws. "Both representatives from the client, Ystad municipality, and Henning Larsen and Sweco have been on site and are pleased with the facade," concludes Jan Kjellkvist. "For us, being able to work on this rather specialised project with Lindab, our principal sheet metal supplier, has felt beneficial and secure. As always, we receive effective support and service from Jimmy and his colleagues at Lindab, however, an altogether too short construction time has meant that planning the delivery of the specially-made plates has been difficult. However, Lindab is clearly doing their best, and as usual we are 100% satisfied with them!"
