Since the 1980s, Roskilde Municipality has been the centre for much of the waste incineration on Zealand through the combined heat and power plant, which is located just outside the town. An entirely new, considerably more efficient and more environmentally-friendly plant is now being built just next to the existing plant – it is known as the Energy Tower.
When the Energy Tower becomes operational in autumn 2013, the plant will provide district heating and electricity for approximately 60,000 households on Zealand. The new plant is built on the very latest technology available within the area and will bring about a distinctly improved degree of efficiency in the production of power and heat. Through highly-developed flue gas purification, the flue gas that exits the approximately 100-metre high chimney will, in principle, be just as pure as water vapour, but considerably cooler.
However, it is not only the new technology that is so special about the Energy Tower, but also, to a great extent, the architectonic design that the Dutch architecture firm, Egeraat, has created. The approximately 150-metre long, 45-metre wide and 35-metre high building, that is reminiscent of Roskilde Cathedral, has "two facades" – an inner climate shell and an outer architectonic decor shell that consists of anodised aluminium discs with large round perforations. Kai Andersen A/S, one of Denmark's leading companies in facade cladding, is responsible for assembling both the climate shell and the decor shell. Virtually all of the material for the climate shell is supplied by Lindab.
"The building's climate shell shall protect the plant against sun, wind and water and is secured to the steel columns and beams that constitute the load-bearing structure and that encompass the various process sections," explains Flemming Morsing, Project Manager at Kai Andersen A/S. "The tipping hall where the waste collection vehicles drive in to the six waste disposal lines has uninsulated facades consisting of Lindab's trapezoidal sheeting, LP1100. The following process sections – the waste management, the incinerator, the turbine and generator room as well as the vast section for waste sorting and flue gas purification – have an equivalent outer facade, but have also been insulated through the use of Lindab's interior wall cassettes. For technical reasons with regard to fire safety, Lindab's sandwich panels have been chosen for the building's external staircases."
The total Coverline delivery from Lindab is extensive and one of the largest to date for an individual project in Denmark: 14,000 m2 of trapezoidal profile sheeting LP1100, 5,500 m2 of sandwich panels, 9,000 m2 of interior wall cassettes and 8,500 m2 of high profile sheeting for the roof. In addition to this, there are, of course, fittings, flat sheeting and attachment material. The deliveries to Kai Andersen have been taking place since late summer 2012.
"The fact that Lindab was able to supply all the material for the climate shell was a key advantage," continues Flemming Morsing. "However, there were two other factors that were, in fact, at least just as important. Firstly, the architect required that the entire climate shell should have a uniform colour that corresponded with the grey colour tone decided upon by the architect. Secondly, this type of project calls for a supplier with good technical know-how and the ability to provide us with support during both the planning stage and delivery. We have worked with Lindab and Søren Møller for many years now and value quick, clear and simple responses as well as an enjoyable cooperation. As usual, Lindab managed all this exceptionally well and, what is more, at a competitive price, which is why we are highly satisfied."
Flemming Morsing also emphasises the advantages that Lindab's interior wall cassettes bring. "Using this solution, we can quickly and easily create an insulated facade and complete interior wall. The cassettes are not only easy to assemble, they are also adapted for the easy installation of the insulation itself and also form the attachment surface for the facade sheeting. They make our facade work quick and efficient!"
