GENERAL
A. All
round and flat oval duct systems shall be treated with a coating containing
the AgION antimicrobial compound as supplied by Lindab, Inc (800) 797-7476
or approved equal. Rectangular duct shall be treated with a coating
containing the AgION antimicrobial compound and supplied by the contractor.
II
MATERIALS
A. All
duct system components shall be manufactured using pre-coated steel
treated with the AgION antimicrobial compound. Duct system components
shall be manufactured from gauges defined in SMACNA's Duct Construction
Standards - latest edition.
B. Antimicrobial
compound shall have ionic silver as its active ingredient which is encapsulated
in a zeolite matrix that provides a continuous controlled release. The
antimicrobial compound shall be blended into an epoxy paint system.
C. Coating
containing the antimicrobial compound shall have a hardness of 2H minimum
when tested per ASTM D3363.
III
APPLICATION
A. For
AgION antimicrobial pre-coated steel products, the coating shall be
uniformly applied by an authorized coil coater and shall have a minimum
thickness of 0.1 mils. The interior surface of the finished duct shall
be treated with the antimicrobial coating. An untreated clear coating
shall be applied to the exterior surface of the duct. [If necessary,
both surfaces of the ductwork shall be treated with the coating containing
the AgION antimicrobial compound].
B. Gaps
in the coating wider than ¼" shall be repaired in order
to maintain product performance. Duct work supplier shall provide repair
kits to the installing contractor.
C. A shopcoat
containing the AgION antimicrobial compound shall be available for spray
or brush application to facilitate on-the-job repairs.
D. The
coating containing the AgION antimicrobial compound shall withstand
temperatures not to exceed 350 F for an extended period of time.
IV
REGULATORY
A. Antimicrobial
compound shall be registered with:
1) Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) for use in HVAC systems.
2) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an acceptable additive in
all food-contact polymers.
3) NSF Standard 51 approved for indirect food contact use in Food
Zones and approved for use in Meat and Poultry Processing Equipment
Product Zone.
B. Antimicrobial
coated product shall be classified by an internationally recognized
laboratory authority to conform to Standard 723 - not to exceed flame
spread or smoke developed ratings of 25/50.
C. Antimicrobial
coated product shall comply with ASTM B117 (salt spray testing), ASTM
D2247 (condensing and humidity testing) and ASTM D870 (water immersion
testing).
